the natural reserve
Without a doubt, of all the Aeolian islands, the "natural oasis" medal goes to Salina. Much of the territory of the island, in fact, shows a landscape in which man was able to work in perfect harmony with nature, without altering the natural balances. And more than half the island has become a natural reserve, rich in vegetation (mainly Mediterranean maquis) and wildlife.
The protected area includes the two volcanoes of Leek and Monte Fossa delle Felci, the latter, being the highest peak of all Aeolian islands, and from its top it is possible to enjoy a 360 degree view of the Sicilian archipelago. The Fossa delle Felci crater, is also home to a colony of century old chestnut trees, probably planted in Roman times. Among other examples of flora are the lentiscus shrubs, the spiny broom, and of course the perpetual prickly pears, typical food of these places. After 600 meters in height, the vegetation becomes more wooded with patches of pines, poplars and cork oaks.
